Weighted vs unweighted keys
Three different actions get sold under two words. The difference matters only if an acoustic piano is somewhere in the player's future, and then it matters a lot.

Weighted keys matter only if an acoustic piano is in the player’s future. If lessons happen on a real piano, weighted action builds the finger strength that instrument demands. If the player wants to play keyboards, write music or accompany singing, unweighted is fine, cheaper and much lighter.
Three actions, not two
The phrase “weighted or not” hides a three-way choice.

What a hammer actually does to your hand
On an acoustic piano, pressing a key throws a felt hammer at a string. The resistance you feel is inertia: the hammer is initially still and has to be accelerated. Once it is moving, it keeps moving, and the key gets lighter partway through the stroke.
That is a specific and unusual sensation, and it is what a pianist’s hands learn to control. Playing quietly means accelerating the hammer gently. Playing loudly means accelerating it hard. All of a pianist’s dynamic control is that one motion, repeated with different force, thousands of times until it is automatic.
A spring does not do this. A spring pushes back the same amount all the way down. The hand learns to overcome a constant force rather than to accelerate a mass. The two motions are close enough that a semi-weighted keyboard feels reasonable, and different enough that hands trained on one are not trained for the other.
The gap, described honestly
Here is what actually happens when a student who has practiced for a year on unweighted keys sits at an acoustic piano.
Everything is heavier than expected, so the first few bars come out uneven and quiet. Fast passages that were comfortable are suddenly beyond the hand’s endurance and the forearm tires within minutes. Dynamic control — the ability to play one note louder than the one beside it — is not there yet, because it was never physically practiced.
None of that is permanent. It is a few months of catch-up, and every skill that is not physical — reading, rhythm, harmony, hand independence — transfers intact. But it is a real few months, and if it was avoidable at purchase time, it was worth avoiding.
When unweighted is the right answer
Plenty of the time, and this deserves saying because the piano-teacher orthodoxy rarely does.
Unweighted is better if the player wants to play keyboard parts rather than piano repertoire; if they are writing or producing music, where fast light action suits programming; if the instrument has to be carried; if it has to be stored between sessions and therefore has to be light enough that it actually gets brought out; or if the player is a child young enough that hand strength is not there yet and a heavy action is genuinely tiring.
That last one is worth dwelling on. A six-year-old on a fully weighted piano has to work hard for every note, and the effort competes with the music for their attention. A lighter action lets them play the tune. There is a reasonable argument for starting a young child on a touch-sensitive unweighted board and moving to weighted at nine or ten, when their hands can drive it.
The one question that settles it
Will this player sit at an acoustic piano within the next two years — a teacher’s, a school’s, a grandparent’s, an exam room’s?
If yes, buy weighted. The catch-up you are avoiding is real and the money is well spent. Our digital piano picks start there.

Anything other than piano. There are only a handful of voices and no arranger features, so if the player wants to make beats or layer sounds, a PSR-E383 will make them happier for less money.

Questions people actually ask
Do beginners need weighted keys?
Only if an acoustic piano is in their future. If lessons are on a real piano, or exams or classical study are the destination, weighted keys build the finger strength the instrument demands. If the player wants to play keyboards, write music or accompany themselves singing, unweighted is fine and considerably lighter to carry.
What is the difference between semi-weighted and fully weighted?
Fully weighted — hammer action — uses a physical weighted lever under each key, reproducing the inertia of a piano hammer. Semi-weighted uses springs to add resistance without inertia. Springs push back constantly; a hammer resists at the start and then moves. Hands can tell the difference immediately.
Can you learn piano on unweighted keys?
You can learn to read music, play chords, build hand independence and understand rhythm — nearly everything, in fact. What you do not build is the finger strength and the touch control an acoustic piano requires, and that gap only becomes visible the first time the student sits at one.
What is graded hammer action?
Weighting that varies across the keyboard: heavier in the bass, lighter in the treble, matching an acoustic piano where the bass hammers are physically larger. The Yamaha P-145’s Graded Hammer Compact action does this across all 88 keys.
